Since the rule of distributing an extra point to whoever set the fastest lap of a grand prix was introduced in 2019 – as long as the driver finished in the top ten – the interest in doing it gained great value, although perhaps never so much. as in the 2021 season.
The battle for the drivers’ title between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton , and the constructors’ title between Red Bull and Mercedes , was so tight this year that any point was vital in the aspirations of each.
Taking this into account, the “mini championship” for the fastest laps was left to Hamilton , who took six points to Verstappen’s five.
Although each managed to set the fastest lap in six races, Verstappen did so on one of the occasions at the Azerbaijan GP , where he retired with a tire blowout while leading and then missed the extra point.
Behind the two main protagonists of the championship, Valtteri Bottas scored the fastest time in the race on four occasions, but in one of them (Mexico) he did it at the end when he was out of the points zone after stopping in the pits to fit soft tires and snatch the lap record – and the extra point – from Verstappen, thus helping Hamilton.
Sergio Pérez , meanwhile, set the race lap record at the British GP and at the Sao Paulo GP . However, at Silverstone he did it in the same way as Bottas in Mexico: to subtract a point from Hamilton and help Verstappen in the championship. Unlike the Finn at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Checo was in the top 10 when he was called to the pits to change tires and go for the record late in the race, which saw him finish 16th.
The other three drivers who scored the fastest race lap this year – and all scored the respective bonus point – were Pierre Gasly (Hungary), Daniel Ricciardo (Italy) and Lando Norris (Russia).

Average speed rating of the VR in the race in the 2021 F1 season
This ranking shows that the new Jeddah and Losail circuits, as well as the revised Yas Marina , are among the fastest of the season. It is also interesting to note that, despite the wet conditions, the average speed of the best lap of the Turkish GP is faster than that of seven circuits where it was run in the dry, something no doubt due in part to the treatment of the asphalt for improve grip.
