Hamilton escapes from penalty at the F1 Saudi Arabian GP

Safety in Formula 1 is paramount and for that reason there are strict regulations that try to protect drivers as much as possible from any potentially dangerous situation that occurs on the track, such as the case of double yellow flags or blue flags.

After finishing the last free practice sessions at the Jeddah circuit, Hamilton was called to testify before the stewards for not obeying yellow flags/lights, since according to what they could see in the data, the Briton did not lift his foot in Sector 1 at the time of these signs.

The Mercedes driver overtook the two Red Bulls and Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri at the time of the double yellow flags, instead of slowing down as required by the regulations.

As a precedent, in the last Qatar GP, Max Verstappen was already sanctioned with five places on the grid after a long meeting for not respecting double yellow flags during the qualifying session in Losail.

If we pay attention to what the FIA International Sporting Code says, all drivers are obliged to “significantly reduce their speed, not overtake and be prepared to change direction or stop” at the moment double yellow flags appear on the track .

Beyond that incident, Hamilton also carried out a controversial action with Nikita Mazepin for which he was also investigated by the FIA. The Russian driver came within inches of colliding with the Brit because the latter was going unnecessarily slow in the fast cornering area at the time the Russian driver was on the fastest lap.

Finally and after hearing the statements of Hamilton and Mercedes regarding both investigations, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix stewards decided not to sanction the British driver, since the double yellow flags were activated in the light panel number 6 accidentally, for less than 1 second.

Mercedes representatives have reviewed the video of the action together with the stewards and, as there is no yellow flag visible either on Hamilton’s steering wheel or in his angle of vision, the Briton escaped the penalty.

The seven-time champion was able to rest easy minutes later, as the FIA announced that his incident with Nikita Mazepin at turn 8 would only result in a reprimand, the second of the year, for him, and a 25,000-euro fine for the Mercedes team.

Teams have the option of appealing certain decisions of the stewards, in accordance with article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and chapter 4 of the body’s Judicial and Disciplinary Regulations, although it must be done within the established deadlines.
