Heart attacks are most severe in the morning

ataqueA team from the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) has discovered thatheart attacks that occur in the morning, specifically between 6 a.m. and noon, have a 20 percent greater probability of generating an area of dead tissue (necrosis) than that which would cause the same heart attack at another time of day. The finding is published in the magazineHeart.

Experts have known for some time thata person’s biological clock influences various physiological processes, including the incidence of heart attacks, which occur more frequently when we wake up. Now researchers have also determined theimpact of the time of day of the infarction on the size of the area of necrotic tissuein patients who suffer a type of attack caused by a prolonged period of obstruction of the blood supply, which causes irreversible damage and is called STEMI. To achieve this, they analyzed data from a total of 811 patients who suffered this type of attack, admitted to the Cardiology Unit of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos, in Madrid, between 2003 and 2009. They calculated the size of the local necrosis by observing a enzyme released in these patients. The time that patients suffered the attack was divided into four six-hour periods within the rhythms of the 24-hour body clock.

The results reveal thatthe patients with the greatest local necrosis were among those who suffered a heart attack between 6 a.m. and noon. These people had a 21 percent higher enzyme level, indicating that a greater amount of heart tissue has been damaged than those who had a heart attack between 6:00 p.m. and midnight.

The researchers also found that patients with a STEMI heart attack that occurred in the anterior wall of the heart suffered greater necrosis than patients who had the attack elsewhere in this organ.
