How are highway tunnels ventilated?

Thanks to natural ventilation, the tunnels can be kept well ventilated. The air inside does not remain static, as it moves at the mercy of weather conditions, such as the wind, and the turbulence generated by cars. As they enter, they force the air to the other end of the subway.

This type of ventilation is valid for tunnels whose length does not exceed half a kilometer and with fluid traffic. When there is a high risk of congestion, the limit length is reduced to between 200 and 300 meters. In tunnels from 500 to 2,500 meters , natural ventilation is completed by accelerating the air flow with the help of gigantic air fans hung from the ceiling.

Those over 2,500 meters need powerful ducted ventilation systems to distribute fresh air and extract contaminated air. The intensity of the aeration is controlled by a computer system that monitors the carbon monoxide rates – recorded by sensors – and the smoke levels – measured by electrical cells placed in the tunnel walls.
