How do glaciers move?

The immense ice sheets that make up the glaciers are formed from successive layers of snow that, under their own weight, undergo a series of physical transformations. The pressure causes the density of the snowflakes to progressively increase. As a consequence of this, the flakes begin to recrystallize, lose the air bubbles enclosed in them and finally become compact ice. Precisely, the advance of the glaciers is due to the plastic deformation suffered by the sheets of compact ice under the action of gravity . This makes some ice sheets move on top of others, as if it were a viscous substance that moves slowly.
