How do you calculate how far away a storm is?

Knowing the distance a storm is from an observer and also knowing if it is approaching or moving away is quite simple: just count the seconds that elapse from when the lightning occurs until the thunder is heard.

The time difference between the two phenomena is due to the fact that, while light travels at a speed of 300,000 kilometers per second, sound travels at only 331 meters per second. To calculate the distance in kilometers that a storm is from us, all you have to do is apply the following mathematical formula: Distance = No. of seconds / 3

Thus, if there is a space of six seconds between the lightning and the thunder, this means that the storm is at a distance of two kilometers.
