How does a water softener work?

The hardness of the water is conditioned by the free ions of calcium and magnesium. Its concentration varies from one water to another. Hard water affects the action of detergent in different ways: on the one hand, chemical reactions take place between calcium and magnesium ; on the other, at higher temperatures, both form calcium and magnesium carbonate, that is, lime. In ancient times, water was softened with potassium carbonate, and at the beginning of the 20th century, with soda. Since the 1950s, with the introduction of washing machines , the industry added sodium pyrophosphate and later triphosphates . These substances bind calcium and magnesium so effectively that no residual substances are formed. Almost all detergents contain a descaler with a softener.
