How does the new rapid AIDS test work?

At the end of 2002, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the marketing of the new OraQuick HIV-1 AIDS test, developed by OraSure Technologies. The test, which must be performed by healthcare personnel, only requires a drop of blood taken from the finger and offers the result in 20 minutes . In contrast, traditional tests to detect antibodies to HIV – the AIDS virus – require an intravenous blood draw and take several days to process the diagnosis.

The OraQuick is 99.6% accurate . Its main limitations are a low incidence of false positives and negatives; and the inability to detect the virus in the first 3 months of infection.
