How does the vet find out about my bird's disease?

The first step to diagnose the disease that our feathery colleague has is through us. We explain ourselves, the humans who live with him will have to provide information to the veterinarian, how to tell him about the environment in which the animal lives, the feces he has made in the past days, the behavior in recent times, etc., so that the professional can get a general idea of the bird’s condition. Once this process is finished, the expert will go on to perform a physical examination and much more specific diagnostic tests.

With the data obtained, an assessment of the different types to which the collection of symptoms and clinical signs may lead should be considered.

As several symptoms can correspond to different pathologies, at this time the work is to rule out the problems that may or may not be those that are affecting the animal. For this, these are the most common diagnostic tests in birds:

. Biopsy : the collection of a direct sample from any of the organic territories of the animal provides us with detailed information on the cause and prognosis of the disease. The specialist usually performs a biopsy of the skin, follicles, liver, spleen, among others. It is a test of risk when the animal has a poor sanitary condition and great care is necessary.

. Hematology and blood chemistry : from a blood extraction (jugular vein, ulnar cutaneous, brachial …) hematology and blood chemistry tests can be performed. Among the most sought values in blood chemistry to establish a diagnosis are: glucose, uric acid, creatinine, cholesterol, bilirubin …

Tissue samples will be obtained from the bird for different tests

. Cytology : this type of diagnosis offers good results in a simple and cheap way. Samples are taken from the upper digestive system, cloaca, respiratory sinuses, skin …

. Coprology : the study of feces is one of the most common tests for the diagnosis of disease in birds. Therefore, it is useful to take to the vet a sample of the feces that your bird has made in the cage in recent days. These samples look for parasites and the optimal use of food, among others.

. Electrocardiogram : although many owners may be surprised that their bird undergoes this test, we can say that it is something common and necessary for a proper assessment of the body’s “motor”: the heart.

. Endoscopy : We already talked about this technique in the article on how to find out the sex of birds. To do this, a small-caliber (2.7-4 mm) rigid endoscope is introduced into the bird, under anesthesia . In addition, it can be used for the diagnosis of innumerable pathologies, for the extraction of samples for biopsy and cytology …

. Microbiology : a large number of bird diseases have their origin in infectious pathologies . For its correct diagnosis, it will be necessary to obtain samples from different parts of the animal (for example, cloaca, blood, crop or choanas) to carry out the isolation and identification of the viral or bacterial agents that cause the disease.

. Radiology : this is one of the most widely used techniques that provide a greater number of data to the professional.
