Indian coronavirus variant in Velbert

The Indian corona mutation is considered very contagious. Now there is a suspicion of an outbreak in Velbert, North Rhine-Westphalia.

Velbert (dpa) – In the case of around 200 people under quarantine in Velbert, the Indian variant of the corona virus has so far been detected in one of the residents.

189 people from two skyscrapers have been quarantined since Sunday, as the health department of the Mettmann district, Marcus Kowalczyk, confirmed to the German press agency on Tuesday morning. All residents of the two houses in the Birth district have now been tested.

So far, there have already been 19 positive corona tests from four families in the two houses. The Indian variant, which is considered to be particularly contagious, was only detected in one case. On Tuesday afternoon, the district received 97 results from all 189 people who had to undergo the series test on Sunday and Monday. The findings were confirmed in six people who were already among the 19 who tested positive. The remaining 91 samples were negative. 92 results were still pending. All residents of the houses should undergo two more tests by Sunday.

“It takes about seven days until the positive corona findings are examined for the Indian variant,” Kowalczyk clarified. He has not yet been able to say how long the isolation of the residents will have to be maintained. Several media had previously reported on the Corona outbreak in Velbert.

According to the information, the German Red Cross (DRK) is taking care of the residents on site. The Indian Corona variant had previously been classified as “worrying” by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to experts, it could be up to 50 percent more contagious than the British variant.
