Numerous websites temporarily unavailable – fault at Fastly

Various websites were inaccessible on Tuesday, including the British government's website.

London – On Tuesday (June 8th, 2021), numerous websites worldwide were inaccessible due to an Internet failure.

Affected were, among others, the website of the British government as well as the news portals of the Guardian, the New York Times, the Financial Times and the French newspaper Le Monde. Instead of the content, only an error message was visible. Internet giants like Reddit and the streaming service Twitch were also offline.

The reason for the failure is said to be problems with Fastly, a US provider of cloud computing services that caches websites so that they can be accessed more quickly. "We are currently investigating possible effects on the functionality of our CDN services," announced Fastly. The problem has now been resolved. The websites are gradually going back online. Websites of major German media were apparently not affected. (lrg / dpa)
