Rapist allegedly set fire to prison cell

A rejected asylum seeker from Ghana, who was convicted of particularly serious rape and extortion by robbery, is on trial again.

Cologne (dpa) – He is said to have set his prison cell on fire and threatened employees in prison with death: the so-called Siegauen rapist has been in front of the Cologne district court since Tuesday.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, the 35-year-old is said to have set fire to the bed in his cell in the prison in Cologne in February 2018.

A constable noticed the fire and was able to save the seriously injured 35-year-old. In the fire, a prison officer and a fellow inmate were injured by smoke inhalation, the indictment said. Furthermore, the defendant is said to have threatened employees of the Cologne prison with death in December 2017 and January 2018. In a further charge, the 35-year-old is also accused of resisting and assaulting prison officers. The prosecution assumes that the 35-year-old is fully guilty.

Images from a surveillance camera played in the courtroom in the 35-year-old’s detention room showed how the defendant first masked the camera lens with a piece of paper. About twenty minutes later the paper peeled off the camera lens and revealed a brightly burning bed in the cell.

The rejected asylum seeker from Ghana was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for particularly serious rape and extortion by predators in a review process before the Bonn Regional Court. The court had come to the conclusion that the defendant had attacked a young couple in 2017 who were camping in the Siegaue near Bonn. He threatened his victims with a pruning saw and raped the woman.

Three more days of trial are planned, and a verdict is due to be pronounced on May 14th.
