The curve rises slowly but steadily: In the corona pandemic, the number of infections in Germany is increasing again. About the autumn holiday effects and target vaccination rates that have not yet been achieved.
Berlin – For the fifth day in a row, the seven-day incidence of the corona pandemic in Germany increased.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Monday at 74.4. This has roughly reached the level of a month ago. The RKI shows seven-day incidences of more than 100 for three federal states: for Thuringia (138.9), Saxony (123.3) and Bavaria (112.9), with partly dynamic developments compared to the previous week’s values.
The trend is also increasing in other federal states. According to the RKI Schleswig-Holstein, the lowest seven-day incidence nationwide – and that by some distance – is 28.3. There the numbers have been pretty constant over the past few days.
The regionally different developments are also likely to be influenced by the autumn holidays, which are over in some places, are just beginning or are just about to begin. RKI President Lothar Wieler recently told the newspapers of the Funke media group that, on the one hand, the holidays had a temporarily dampening effect on infections because of the closed schools. On the other hand, after the autumn vacation, more cases are to be expected again after trips abroad. This had already been observed after the summer vacation.
The RKI has been emphasizing for some time that it expects the number of infections to rise again in the cooler season. One of the reasons for this is that people then spend more time in closed rooms, where the risk of infection is higher than outside. The Berlin virologist Christian Drosten said at the end of September that he expected the autumn and winter waves to roll off at a time like last year. At that time it was clear in the second half of October “that we are going into an exponential increase again”.
According to the RKI, the severity of the wave depends primarily on the vaccination rate. This also varies regionally. Saxony and Thuringia are at the bottom of a nationwide comparison, and according to the vaccination dashboard, the highest proportion of vaccinated citizens is in Bremen and Saarland.
Last week the RKI reminded that the target vaccination rates of at least 85 percent for 12 to 59 year olds and at least 90 percent for people over 60 years had not been achieved – not even under the assumption that the actual number was Vaccinated persons are likely to be higher than recorded in the registration statistics.
As the RKI data continued on Monday, the health authorities in Germany reported 4056 new corona infections within one day. This is evident from the numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 4:07 a.m. A week ago the value was 3111 infections.
According to the new information, ten deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were seven deaths. The RKI has counted 4,377,845 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.
The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Monday at 1.92, a slight increase compared to the previous week’s value. However, the RKI generally speaks of a possible underestimation of the number “to a certain extent” over a period of 14 days due to a delay in the reports from the hospitals. A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.
