Scotland loses its natural greenery

escocia-verde-satelite One of the hottest months in history has caused some of Scotland’s typical natural greenery to disappear. This can be seen in a satellite image provided by the European Space Agency (ESA).

Whiskey country is not used to long periods of low rainfall. Hence, when they ask us what is the color that would define this country, many of us answer without thinking: green. However, a photograph of ESA’s Envisat has revealed a very different reality: Scotland is losing its natural green.

As if it were the Castilian plateau in the middle of summer, the brownish color has made its appearance in the Scottish territory due to an exceptionally dry spring in the western part of the continent (unlike in the Iberian Peninsula, where the rains are even for above the average of other years). Scotland has received exactly a third less rain than usual in April , a notable difference that has affected crops and river flows in the British Isles.

According to forecasts by British meteorologists, if this heat wave continues, it could be the hottest May in 350 years.

Some countries have already taken action against drought. In the United Kingdom or France, some regulations for irrigation of crops have been imposed to prevent the situation from worsening and in the Netherlands, for example, barbecues have been banned in the east of the country due to the risk of fires.
