Survey: car buyers are losing interest in combustion engines

Internal combustion engines are becoming less popular. Electric and hybrid models have increased in private new car purchases.

Bochum (dpa) – Private new car buyers in Germany are increasingly losing interest in cars with internal combustion engines. Among the participants in the latest Aral study, 15 percent wanted a purely electric car and 27 percent a hybrid model as their next car, as the largest German petrol station chain reported on Wednesday. Compared to the previous study from 2019, this is an increase of 18 percentage points, with which the alternative drives are almost level with the classic combustion engines.

There were heavy losses in the case of gasoline engines, which two years ago were the first choice for 55 percent of prospective buyers and have now dropped to 32 percent. Diesel showed a slight recovery with an approval rate of 16 percent after 12 percent in 2019.

Overall, the interest in buying cars has risen significantly again, reported the BP subsidiary Aral. According to this, 40 percent of all respondents intended to buy a car in the next 18 months. In the survey that has been running since 2003, there was only a higher value in 2017. One in four of those interested wants to buy a used car and the remaining 75 percent new or annual cars. In terms of brand popularity, VW and Audi were just ahead of BMW.
