Formula 1 arrives this weekend at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for a final that will be historic whatever the result. But in the event that Lewis Hamilton takes the title, it will be even more so, since if he did so he would become the driver with the most titles in the highest category in solitude.
Currently the British driver is equal in that aspect with Michael Schumacher with seven crowns each after his impressive run of championships achieved in recent seasons with Mercedes, a period in which he also broke most of the most relevant records of the former German driver, such as victories, pole positions and podiums in the highest category.
Sebastian Vettel, who always remembers his total admiration for Schumacher, was asked this Thursday in Abu Dhabi what he felt about the possibility of Hamilton becoming the driver with the most world championships in history.
“Michael is my hero. For that reason, I probably don’t want Lewis to win,” Vettel began his reply with characteristic sincerity. “But the truth is that they have both had a great season and they come into the last race with a chance to win the championship because they both deserve it.”
“So yeah, in a way I would be happy if Michael’s record still stands. But even if Lewis wins, to me Michael is still the greatest, so Lewis can win one more, two more, three more, five more championships. , that doesn’t change anything for me. And I get along with Lewis, so like I said, probably instinct tells me I want Max to win to keep Michael’s record alive, but my head is pretty clear that he has to win the better,” he explained.
On the other hand, if Max Verstappen is champion, Vettel would no longer be the only driver to have won a title with Red Bull, but that wouldn’t bother him.
“I don’t care. You know, obviously the team has changed a lot. Some left a long time ago like me, some are still there. So it would be great to see them win. the points they have lost after the last race.
“But I would be happy if they would win the championship. Because I have very strong, wide and nice memories with them. So it would be nice for them too. But as I said, from the drivers’ point of view, they both deserve it. From the From the team’s point of view, it’s clear I’m closer to Red Bull than Mercedes and it would be nice if they got another championship.”
