What are papillomaviruses?

It is a group of viruses that infects the epithelial cells of the skin and mucous membranes. The clinical manifestations of the infection are multiple and depend on the type of papillomavirus (HPV) and the location of the lesion. These DNA viruses , which are transmitted by direct contact with the affected skin or mucosa , cause from asymptomatic lesions to warts of all kinds: condylomas and local neoplasms, as well as oral and genital carcinomas.

The treatment of these ailments is nonspecific. Some drugs, such as interferon, podophyllin resin, and 5-fluoracil, are effective in fighting HPV. In some cases, the only alternative is surgery.
