What caused the extinction of the trilobites?

During the Cambrian, about 500 million years ago, trilobites were as common and diverse as their modern-day crustacean cousins. These armored creatures crawled across the seafloors of the entire world. But 250 million years later they disappeared at a stroke from the face of the Earth without science being able to know the trigger for their extinction until now. For Danita Brandt, a paleontologist at the University of Michigan, in the US, the end of trilobites is on their way to molt . These, like all arthropods, were wrapped in a calcareous shell from which they had to periodically shed in order to grow. Brandt has studied thousands of molted exoskeletons and found that the cleft where they usually left the old shell appears sealed or was so reduced that the trilobite was trapped.
