What is methadone?

Discovered by German scientists during World War II, methadone is a synthetic derivative of opium that poses fewer toxic risks than other narcotics, such as morphine and heroin. Its analgesic action occurs in different areas of the central nervous system, altering the perception of pain, as well as its emotional response.

Medical studies have indicated that one milligram of this substance can replace four of morphine and two of heroin, preventing the appearance of withdrawal syndrome in the addict . Methadone, which comes in white tablets and a bitter-tasting liquid, has come up with a promising competitor: levomethadyl acetate hydrochloride (LAMM).
