What is the largest cave?

It is called Mammoth Cave and it is located in the North American state of Kentucky . It is a calcareous cavern with more than 484 km of passages at five different levels, which forms the largest cave system in the world known to date. At the lower level, 110 meters below the surface, flows a stream, the Echo River, with a length of 1.2 km and a width of 60 m. It is home to rare animals, such as blind fish and an albino, eyeless crayfish.

The cave was rediscovered by European settlers in 1798, although at least 10 miles had already been explored by Aborigines 4,000 years ago. In 1835 the mummified body of a man from pre-Columbian times was located. In 1839, the cave was bought by Dr. John Croghan, a Louisville physician who believed that the climate was beneficial for tuberculosis patients. Obviously, the experiment ended fatally.

To preserve the cave, the Mammoth Cave National Park was created, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1981 and a Biosphere Reserve in 1990.
