What is the longest animal migration in the world?

The arctic tern ( Sterna paradisaea ) travels more than 70,000 kilometers in its annual migration from pole to pole, the equivalent of three round trips to the moon during its entire life. This makes their migration the longest in the animal world , according to a study by the "British Antarctic Survey" recently published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

To reach this conclusion, the authors followed the migratory movements of a dozen specimens of this seabird with the help of a miniature geolocator weighing 1.4 grams . In this way they verified that some were capable of traveling about 80,000 kilometers per year on their round trip from the Arctic to Antarctica. In addition, they observed that, during the journey that these seabirds make from North to South, they rest for a month in an area of the North Atlantic and then, following parallel paths, they divide into groups. Some travel the coasts of South America and others those of the African continent.
