Forested areas cover more than a quarter of the planet, excluding Antarctica and Greenland. Half are in the tropics and the rest are in the temperate and boreal zones. The countries that host the largest number of them are Russia, Canada, Brazil, the United States, China, Indonesia and Congo , with 60% of the world's forest area. Those that are best conserved are the boreal ones, which represent 48% of the total, compared to 44% of the tropical ones and only 3% of the temperate forests.
In order to avoid increasing forest loss, various organizations have proposed that at least 10% of each type of forest ecosystem have real protection.
