Where does the jet come from?

Jet is a hard, black variety of lignite of high economic and artisanal value that, once polished, acquires a velvety shine. It has been used in the manufacture of beads for necklaces, earrings, rings, buttons, and also as a mourning jewel. This organic mineral comes from the wood of trees of the Protopinaceae group, a fossil botanical family that became extinct 65 million years ago , at the same time as the dinosaurs. This is revealed by a multidisciplinary study on its origin carried out by researchers from the University of Oviedo and the National Carbon Institute. The work refutes the widespread belief that it comes from the araucaria, an arboreal species that abounds in South America.

The scientists' work is now focused on knowing the process by which, from the same Jurassic plant trunk, one part was transformed into jet, another into coal and another has fossilized maintaining the structure of the vegetable plant.
