Why are amphibians disappearing?

Since the 1980s, amphibians have been in dramatic decline around the world and are becoming extinct at rates a thousand times higher than normal . During the last three years, the World Amphibian Assessment has been carried out and the territorial distribution and conservation of the 5,743 known amphibian species have been studied. After this work it has been concluded that 1,856 of them, 32%, are in danger of extinction . They say that amphibians are like canaries in a mine, quickly detecting changes in the environment , including variations in fresh water and air quality. In America, the Caribbean and Australia, a highly infectious disease called "chytridiomycosis" has been discovered, which is especially damaging to this group of animals.
