Why are gecko toes sticky?

The gecko's foot contains millions of tiny fibers with tiny pads at the tips that are only 200 billionths of a meter thick. But geckos do not use, like insects, suction or slimy secretions to hold on, rather they rely on the almost imperceptible molecular interactions that work over short distances.
