Why is the magnet distorting the monitor screen?

The inside of the television or monitor screen is lined with a series of vertical and parallel stripes of phosphorescent material. One strip is red, the next one is green and the next is blue; the same pattern always repeats.

Inside the image tube is the electron gun, a device that contains three tubes – one for each basic color – that generate beams of electrons. Each of these impacts on the stripes of the corresponding color. The electrons sweep the screen, exciting the phosphorescent material. If we bring a magnet closer to the screen, its magnetic field deflects the path of the electrons , which impact in areas where they should not. The result is a distorted image.
