The body stiffness – rigor mortis that appears in corpses between three and 36 hours after death is due to a series of biochemical reactions that occur in the muscles.

In a living body, muscle cells can breathe aerobically – that is, consuming oxygen – or anaerobically, without the need for this gas. This last type of metabolism generates lactic acid as a final product, which is stored in the muscles causing soreness.

Aerobic respiration allows the removal of this acid, but, in cadavers, the muscle cells only work anaerobically, causing an excessive accumulation of lactic acid . This facilitates a complex chemical reaction in which actin and myosin – muscle contraction proteins – fuse into a gel that immobilizes muscle fibers.
