Heavy rains have triggered devastating landslides in northwest China. Around 2000 rescue workers have been mobilized. But for 16 people, any help came too late.

Beijing (AP) – Flash floods after heavy rains in north-west China have killed 16 people. Another 36 were still missing, as reported by state television. The accident happened on Wednesday evening in the mountains of Datong County near the city of Xining in Qinghai Province.

Heavy rains triggered landslides that blocked and diverted rivers. More than 6,000 people in two communities and six villages were affected. Around 2,000 rescue workers, including police officers, paramilitary units, emergency services and officials, were mobilized for the rescue work.

Qinghai province declared the second highest alert level in the four-tier response system for emergencies and disasters, state media reported. The Hui and Tu minorities in particular live in the affected area
