It is one of the largest folk festivals in the world, but the Cannstatter Wasen was canceled twice due to the corona virus. After the pandemic break, it is now taking place again for the first time.

Stuttgart – Stuttgart’s Lord Mayor Frank Nopper (CDU) pierced the beer keg in the Dinkelacker festival tent with two blows and thus opened the 175th Cannstatter Wasen. He handed the first beer to Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Transport, Winfried Hermann, who represented Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (both Greens).

Most recently, the Wasen, one of the largest folk festivals in the world, was canceled twice due to the corona. After the pandemic break, it is now taking place again for the first time. Celebrating a folk festival in times of crisis? An important sign for Nopper: “Since its first edition, the Cannstatter Wasen has been a mental crisis management program. We need joie de vivre, but with reason,” he said in his opening speech.

After the Corona break, around 3.5 million visitors are expected at the 175th edition of the folk festival this year. dpa
