2022 work calendar in Spain: How many holidays and long weekends do you have?

The resolution published in the BOE for the 2022 Labor Calendar shows the number of holidays that we will have next year, with a total of 12 national holidays of which only 8 will be celebrated throughout Spain, as happens every year . Are these:

  • Saturday, January 1: New Years.
  • Thursday, January 6 : Epiphany of the Lord.
  • Friday April 15 : Good Friday.
  • Monday, August 15 : Assumption of the Virgin.
  • Wednesday October 12 : National Holiday of Spain.
  • Tuesday, November 1 : All Saints.
  • Tuesday December 6 : Spanish Constitution Day.
  • Thursday, December 8 : Immaculate Conception.

Of those mentioned, seven will be non-replaceable holidays, but on January 6, which in 2022 falls on Thursday, it will be movable, so that the State allows the communities to change this holiday and change it for an autonomous one.

To these national holidays, regional and local holidays must be added , and we must also take into account that the Labor Festival (May 1) and Christmas (December 25) fall on Sunday in 2022.

The other substitutable holidays

The 2022 working calendar includes 12 national holidays, but four of them are movable (in addition to the designated January 6), so each Autonomous Community can move the holiday if it so wishes. These are then those four movable dates:

Thursday April 14 : Holy Thursday. Public holidays in all of Spain with the exception of Catalonia.
Monday, May 2 : The Labor Festival (which runs from Sunday, May 1 to Monday, May 2). It will be a holiday in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Extremadura and Murcia.
Monday, July 25: Santiago Apóstol. It will be a holiday in Madrid, Navarra, La Rioja and Galicia (which also celebrate their national holiday).
Monday, December 26: Monday after Christmas. Public holidays throughout Spain except in Galicia, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community and Ceuta.

Autonomous holidays in 2022

In addition to the 8 national holidays throughout Spain, each Community also has four autonomous holidays. They are as follows:

  • Andalusia : February 28 (Andalusia Day), April 14 (Holy Thursday), May 2 (Monday following the Labor Festival) and December 26 (Monday after Christmas).
  • Aragon : April 14 (Holy Thursday), April 23 (Aragon Day), May 2 (to move on May 1) and December 26 (to move on December 25).

  • Balearic Islands : March 1 (Balearic Day), April 14, April 18 (Easter Monday) and December 26.

  • Cantabria : April 14, July 28 (Cantabria Day), September 15 (La Bien Aparecida) and December 26.
  • Castilla-La Mancha : April 14, May 31 (Castilla-La Mancha Day), June 16 (Corpus Christie), December 26.

  • Extremadura: April 14, May 2, September 8 (Extremadura Day) and December 26.
  • Galicia: April 14, May 17 (Galician Literature Day), June 24 (San Juan) and July 25 (Santiago Apóstol).

  • Valencian Community : March 19 (San José), April 14, April 18, June 24.
  • Ceuta: April 14, July 9 (Feast of the Sacrifice), August 5 (Our Lady of Africa) and September 2 (Ceuta Day).
  • Melilla: April 14, May 3 (Eid Fitr Festival), July 11 (Sacrifice Festival) and December 26).

Bridges that we will have in 2022

Once we have established the 2022 work calendar and the holidays that we are going to have next year, we can know which bridges are going to be celebrated. Are these:

  • January Bridge : January 1, 2022 falls on a Saturday so that for those who work on Saturday they can enjoy a full weekend.
  • April Bridge: Those communities that celebrate a holiday on Holy Thursday, April 14, may make a four-day bridge since Friday, April 15 is also a holiday.
  • October Bridge: November 1, 2022 is All Saints’ Day and falls on a Tuesday, so some people will make a four-day bridge if they celebrate on Monday, October 31.
  • December bridge: The most anticipated bridge of all involves December 6 and 8, which in 2022 will fall on Tuesday and Thursday so that some people could have a party of almost a week if we add the previous weekend, and that on Monday and Wednesday they have permission to celebrate.
