On one of the runways of the former Tegel Airport, they took their places at tables that were set up in such a way that when viewed from the air they showed the words “Berlin loves you” and a big heart. The guests provided food and drink themselves, but according to the organizers, the offer also included “small free catering”. Different artists provided a colorful cultural and music program.
The action was called “Freedom Dinner” by the Senate and the city’s tourism officials. Berlin’s governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) had declared in advance that after many months of the corona pandemic, Berlin wanted to send the signal “Berlin is back!”.
The organizers of the Visit Berlin tourism agency spoke of a “celebration of diversity and joie de vivre” and hope that this will also promote the capital city. According to earlier information, they took half a million euros by hand.
According to the organizers, the free tickets were sold out in a short time. At the end of July 2000 were initially on offer, at the beginning of the week the quota was increased again by 1000. dpa
