A judge authorizes doctors to perform a cesarean section, despite opposition from the mother

It is not the first time that justice has to take the floor and decide what is best for the well-being of a child. And this sometimes means contradicting the wishes of the parents.

According to the newspaper ‘Información’, the General Hospital of Elche requested emergency permission from the city court so that a 32-week-old baby could be born by cesarean section, despite the fact that his mother refused , because she wanted a natural delivery.

The magistrate understood that the intervention had to be carried out because there was a risk to the life of the baby , who had an obstructed umbilical cord.

“Cultural reasons”

That was the mother’s claim to oppose any medical treatment, although she was warned of the risk it entailed for the health of the fetus, according to the newspaper that first echoed the news.

The pregnant woman went into labor at the Hospital of Elche in the 32nd week of gestation, just over seven months. It was then that the doctors detected that his umbilical cord was obstructed. They indicated a cesarean section but the woman refused.

The newspaper adds that the hospital worked against the clock to be able to perform the cesarean section, once it was authorized by the magistrate last Wednesday night, since “the fetus ran the risk of dying by not being able to receive the necessary oxygen and nutrients to survive”.

The little one was admitted to the Neonatal ICU , as established by the protocol in cases of premature infants, but is progressing favorably.
