A magnitude 7.3 earthquake shakes Fukushima

This Wednesday an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 has shaken the north of Japan . The information that arrives from the Japanese chain NHK indicates that the earthquake would have occurred in the Fukushima prefecture. The Japanese country has activated the tsunami alert.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred in the same place where the fatal earthquake of magnitude 9.0 took place in 2011 that caused a tsunami, which in turn caused a nuclear disaster . What has come to be known as the Great East Japan (Tohoku) earthquake caused numerous deaths and a level 7 nuclear accident, a serious accident according to the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.

The current earthquake occurred at 11:36 p.m. local time (2:36 p.m. GMT), at a depth of 60 kilometers.

The company that operates the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, has reported that its workers are checking for damage.

The Japanese authorities have asked the population to stay away from the coastal areas because there is a danger of a tsunami . In fact, the waves are expected to arrive in a matter of hours.

Two million homes in the area have been left without electricity. No news on fatalities or damage yet.
