A third for tightening the corona measures

How to deal with the pandemic – relax the measures or tighten the reins further? According to a survey, a third of respondents are in favor of stricter rules.

Berlin – In view of the drastically increasing number of corona infections, around a third of the people in Germany (34 percent) are in favor of tightening the measures.

According to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency, around another third (35 percent) consider the existing restrictions to be correct and sufficient to counter the rapid spread of the omicron virus variant. However, 24 percent are in favor of easing. 7 percent do not provide any information.

Today Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and the Prime Ministers of the federal states are discussing how to proceed in the corona pandemic. According to a draft resolution for the deliberations (as of Sunday, 6 p.m.), citizens will probably not be faced with any further tightening – but no easing either. It was agreed that “the rules for social contacts and events that have been in force so far will continue to apply,” it says.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”: “We don’t need a course correction.” This is supported by the government’s Corona Expert Council. In a new statement, however, the committee calls for further steps to be taken as a precaution because of the rapid spread of omicrons. dpa
