Childbirth is an extremely important time for mother and child, and what happens in it is engraved on both brains. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mothers deserve to have a positive birth experience, in which their needs are respected and cared for, as well as having the necessary medical care.

However, this was not the case of a mother, who has revealed the video in which she is seen giving birth alone in her cell and without medical attention , despite having requested it from the staff who were there.

Diana Sánchez is the name of the 27-year-old woman who gave birth in July last year while in prison for the crime of identity theft. The time that she was in prison was short, but it coincided with her last weeks of gestation, since she entered when she was eight months pregnant.

According to the lawsuit she has filed against the Denver City Council and Counties, as well as the medical health center and six of the workers who were there on the day of her son’s birth, Diana was denied medical assistance. Despite the fact that she requested it since she began with contractions, she asked the prison staff for help.

A year after what happened, with the help of a law firm, Diana has decided to sue, because she defends her right to have a safe delivery and explains in the document that instead of guaranteeing that she had her baby in adequate conditions, the staff He forced her to give birth in her cell, dirty and alone, without any kind of medical attention .

As evidence of what happened and with her authorization, the law firm released the shocking video of the cell in which Diana was , and you can see how from five in the morning she has repeatedly requested help, since it began. with contractions until the water broke.

In the video, Diana is seen lying on the bed in her cell, suffering severe pain with each contraction and screaming in agony for hours, until finally, at 10:44 a.m., after five hours of requesting help. and not receive it, your baby is born.

The only medical attention she received was when her baby was born and a nurse came to see him. It was up to 15 minutes after delivery that firefighters arrived and treated the baby , cutting the umbilical cord and performing routine medical procedures on the newborn.

For this reason, and because it was a traumatic experience for her and her baby, she has decided to sue them, since the prison staff should have called an ambulance so that she was transferred to the hospital and could give birth in a safe and medical environment. cleansed.

According to information from The Guardian, the prison’s medical staff belongs to Denver Health, the city’s public hospital, and they were responsible for treating Diana. At the moment they have not issued any statement because the lawsuit is in process , but a spokesperson explained that they have always provided medical attention to the prisoners assigned to them.

On the other hand, and according to statements from the Denver sheriff, prison policies have changed to ensure that all prisoners who are in any stage of labor are immediately transferred to the hospital. Previously, this decision depended solely on the nurses present in the prison, but now the staff are also authorized to call an ambulance in situations like this.

Prisoner or not, all women should receive dignified and respected treatment in their delivery , something that obviously did not happen in the case of Diana, who instead of receiving the medical attention she requested, only received indifference and abandonment.
