After spring weather: hurricane for Valentine's Day – DWD warns for large parts of Germany

The last few days in Germany have been sunny like spring. Now there are storm warnings from the DWD. The forecasts could also disappoint many winter fans.

Munich – 15 degrees in February? The last few days have already given hope for the beginning of spring. Even the first flowers can already be seen in some places. Like last year, there is no sign of a winter wonderland for Valentine’s Day. Now the weather in Germany seems to be becoming more uncomfortable again. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns.

Storm warning in Germany: DWD and weather experts warn – “The situation is not harmless”

Instead of wintry, it can get stormy again in Germany from February 14th. “The situation in the coming week has a lot of potential for severe storms across Western and Central Europe,” says Dominik Jung at wetter.net. The jet stream is shifting to Central Europe and driving the western weather conditions. “The situation is not without danger, because heavy gusts of wind* appear again and again in the weather forecasts* for Germany,” explains the qualified meteorologist.

Wetter.net speaks of speeds of around 80 to 90 kilometers per hour. At the beginning of the week, the DWD warned of stormy gusts with wind force eight up to hurricane-force gusts with wind force 11, especially in the mountains and on the sea. Wind force 11 corresponds to a speed of 103 to 117 km/h*. In summary, the DWD says for Germany from Monday (February 14):

  • West and north as well as in the middle: stormy gusts are unlikely (wind force 8)
  • Northern center: local gusts of wind not excluded (wind force 9)
  • Bergland: gusts of wind likely (wind force 9)
  • On the mountain peaks: sometimes heavy gusts of wind (wind force 10) or hurricane-force gusts from the southwest (wind force 11)

At the end of January, northern Germany had already suffered severe gusts of wind. The fire brigade declared a state of emergency for a large city due to the storm. Is the snow* coming back with the gusts of wind?

Storm low Nadia caused chaos in Germany at the end of January. There are storm warnings again.

Temperatures in February: It’s getting warm in Germany – no more hope for snow?

“February 2022 could be one of the warmest February months since 1881,” weather expert Dominik Jung reported. As early as February 9th, the temperatures in Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate had reached maximum values of up to 15 degrees. Despite the storm, it seems to be spring-like at the end of February. Both the DWD and wetter.net are reporting highs of around ten degrees for the next week. On Sunday (February 13) in the southwest again up to 13 degrees. February is around two to three degrees above the 30-year average across Germany, according to Jung.

A short cold front*, which previously moves across the north, could bring the last icy days. The temperatures drop below 10 degrees again until February 14th, the snow line drops and in addition to rain there can also be sleet and winter thunderstorms – a short winter interlude, because the trend points towards spring. “This February there will be no more permanent snow cover in the lowlands below 500 m and certainly no permafrost,” says wetter.net. “Winter weather is not in sight”, is the gossip from weather expert Jung for all snow fans. There are also gloomy weather forecasts in Bavaria*. (chd) *Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
