Life imprisonment and psychiatric treatment – that was the verdict in the trial surrounding the fatal rampage in Trier. The defense has now appealed.

Trier – One day after the verdict on the fatal rampage in Trier, the defense appealed. This was announced by the spokeswoman for the Trier district court at the request of the German Press Agency.

The gunman was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday for multiple murders and multiple attempted murders. In addition, the court had determined the particular gravity of the guilt and ordered his placement in a closed psychiatric hospital because of a mental illness of the 52-year-old.

The court saw it as proven that the German drove his SUV through the Trier pedestrian zone during the rampage on December 1, 2020 in order to kill or injure as many people as possible. Five people died in the act, including a baby. There were also many injured and traumatized. The man suffers from paranoid schizophrenia with delusions – and remained silent on the allegations during the year-long trial. dpa
