Downpours, hail and squalls are expected in southern Germany on Friday. However, not everyone will be affected by the storm, as meteorologist Bernd Madlener explains.

Stuttgart – The mega heat is followed by a big bang: storms on Friday will cool the weather in Germany for a short time. Deep “Imke” meets the heat of the Sahara with its cold air. The south will feel the consequences of the “air mass crash” on Friday afternoon.

“This exchange of air masses can lead to strong thunderstorms,” says Bernd Madlener, meteorologist at wetter.com. , hail, downpour and squalls are then locally possible. Especially the south of Germany has to be prepared for a lot from Friday afternoon.

Severe weather warning for the southwest

On Friday, the Imke low pressure area is still over Scandinavia and extends from there to us in Germany. However, the south of Germany will not feel too much of this on Friday, because the hot air from the Sahara is still predominant there. Temperatures in Baden-Württemberg are again rising above the 30-degree mark.

On Friday morning, the showers and thunderstorms will move across the northwestern half of Germany. According to Bernd Madlener, heavy rain, hail and strong gusts of wind can occur locally. “But that’s just a one-off story,” says the meteorologist. In the southeast you can still look forward to sunshine and only a few clouds in the morning.

“The cold front reaches the extreme east and south-east in the evening and clears away the heat,” explains Bernd Madlener. As early as midday, most of the energy builds up in the middle and in the south of the country due to the muggy heat. That’s where the big thunderclouds form, as the weather expert explains. There it could at least “go very well” in places. Similar to the morning in the north, there will be local hail, heavy rain and gusty winds in the south. Only in Lower Bavaria should it remain calm.

It’s getting stormy: there are local gusts of wind up to 100 kilometers per hour in Baden-Württemberg

The German Weather Service (DWD) also warns of local storms in Baden-Württemberg. From the late afternoon and evening into the night there will be thunderstorms in the very south with heavy rain of up to 25 liters per square meter in a short time. The wind generally freshened up throughout Germany on Friday, including outside of the thunderstorm fronts. Hail and gusts of wind up to 85 kilometers per hour are also not excluded. There is also an increased risk of storms due to heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter of rain, larger hail and heavy gusts of wind up to 100 kilometers per hour.

Later in the evening and at night, the risk of gusts and hail falls eastwards, but it can continue to rain heavily for several hours with precipitation amounts of up to 70 liters per square meter.

The “open-air oven heat” is going away due to the storm for the time being. However, the temperatures are already rising again at the weekend and the sun is showing up again, especially in the south.
