Kassel – In the new year, some changes * will also apply in supermarkets and discounters, because various changes in the law came into force on January 1st. Customers of Aldi, Lidl, Edeka, Rewe * and Co. can particularly benefit from a change, because supermarkets and discounters must now offer a new service.

From January, an extended take-back obligation for electrical devices will apply in Germany. For example, anyone who buys a kettle, toaster or washing machine in the supermarket now has more options for disposing of them.

Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co .: New service for customers starts in 2022

The new regulation applies to supermarkets and discounters with a sales area of 800 square meters or more. Many branches of Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. now have to set up a collection point for electrical appliances. However, the regulation only takes effect if the corresponding shops offer electrical and electronic devices in their range several times a calendar year or permanently.

For the return of smaller electrical devices, it does not matter where the old devices were originally purchased and there is no need to buy a new device, says the Federal Environment Agency. However, there is a limit of five old devices that can be returned. Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. only have to take back washing machines, televisions and printers if a similar new device is purchased. This regulation applies to all electrical appliances that are larger than 25 centimeters.

Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co .: transition period for electrical collection points until June 30th

Anyone who has an electrical device delivered to their home also has the option of disposing of an old device free of charge. When concluding the purchase contract, the dealer must inform customers about the possibility of free return of old devices and free pick-up of the old device and offer to take the old device with them on delivery. Lidl and Aldi Süd * and Aldi Nord * also offer the dispatch of electrical appliances through their online shops.

The take-back obligation for specialist retailers with a retail space of over 400 square meters or online retailers with a shipping and storage area of over 400 square meters has been in effect for a long time. The new regulation, which now also applies to supermarkets and discounters such as Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Edeka, will apply from January 1, but there is a transition period until June 30, 2022.
