Alfa Romeo's future in F1 will be decided in July

Alfa Romeo joined the Sauber structure from the 2018 season so that those from Hinwil definitively adopted the name of the Italians a year later. The team that won the first race in the history of Formula 1 back in 1950, returned after more than three decades away, although not in the best way.

Like Alfa Romeo they finished consecutively in eighth position in the constructors’ championship, and last year they barely managed to get 13 points , which allowed them to finish just ahead of Haas, who did not add any units in the 22 races.

During that campaign, rumors began of a possible sale to Andretti so that the American could create his structure in the Great Circus, but it did not go beyond mere talk in the paddock.

“The future of the partnership between Alfa Romeo and Sauber will be announced in July,” confirmed the Italian company’s CEO, Jean Philippe Imparato , together with the CEO of the Stellantis group, Carlos Tavares in Imola.

“It’s not a complicated process,” said the Frenchman. “There are two aspects that we will evaluate, the results and the economic performance.”

Everything seems to indicate that the association will be extended seeing the growth of the team in Formula 1, since they have gone from having Andretti flying overhead to being a team with enough speed to consistently score points on weekends.

Thus, the official announcement will come in two or three months, but this is good news for Alfa Romeo’s development in the highest category of motorsport, as Imparato’s comments have suggested.

The indirect confirmation also came from the words of Tavares, who explained the vision of the agreement that returned the name of the Italian manufacturer to the Great Circus, rejecting the accusation of not really being present with its own program.

“There are those who have criticized our choice,” said the CEO of Stellantis . “I answer that there is not only one way to be in Formula 1, owning a team is one way, but there are many others, and among them is the one we have chosen.”

“If we are here on the track, if there is a team called Alfa Romeo and it is ready for a Grand Prix, I can say that it is working well,” said the Portuguese.
