Almost all employees in a business quit together – because their salary is not enough to live on

The underpayment is enormous in some professions. But if even the salary is no longer enough to live on, this brings the barrel to overflow for many. A case in the USA shows what happens then.

Minnesota – The corona pandemic * puts an enormous strain on nursing staff in intensive care units and in old people’s homes. Irregular working hours, weekend and holiday shifts and, above all, poor pay mean that more and more nurses are quitting their jobs. In the first wave alone, around 9,000 people left the nursing profession between April and July. This is evident from the information provided by the Federal Employment Agency. But the wage gap is also wide in other professions – and not just in Germany, as an incident in the USA * now shows.

In the state of Minnesota, clothing store employees had enough of their poor pay. According to employees, the company “Hot Topic” was unable to pay a living wage. So they got together and decided unanimously to quit their employer. He had no choice but to close the shop, as no replacement could be found so quickly.

Unanimously terminated: employees leave a note

The employees explained their situation to the customers who were now standing in front of the closed doors on a piece of paper, which caused a lot of reactions on Twitter. “We cannot feed ourselves and our families. We have worked so hard and we can’t go on, ”says the piece of paper that is stuck to the door of the shop.

Too little salary: Work cannot be paid with passion

Employees receive a lot of support in social networks. “Every job should be able to be paid in such a way that one can support a family,” comments a user on Twitter. Others who felt the same talk about their own experiences with the company or the poor pay in other jobs. The employees of the “Hot Topic” shop apologize for the inconvenience, but also explain: “You can’t pay your workers with passion.” (Ij) * Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
