Alonso and Ocon's defense: "I had to lift in three corners"

Alonso qualified on Saturday in Hungary behind his teammate Ocon, and at the start he tried to steal sixth place from the Frenchman. However, he was cornered by the other Alpine on the main straight a few meters from the start, and that caused him to lose position with Lewis Hamilton (who went off the track at turn 1) and Sergio Pérez, whom could happen soon after.

“Never, never in my life have I seen a defense like Esteban’s today!” He shouted on the radio about the start maneuver, angry.

Finally, and despite the fact that the strategy of mounting hard tires seemed to ruin his points options, Fernando Alonso managed to take advantage of the rivals’ mistakes and reached a good pace with the white Pirelli to be eighth.

But before that, when his teammate Ocon also pitted, they had another duel that Daniel Ricciardo took advantage of to pass them both. In the end, the two Alpines would finish ahead of the Australian, who ran out of steam.

“Every point costs this year,” Alonso told the DAZN F1 microphones. “Once again a race in which we started in a good position has cost us to score points and well, I was eighth, well, after a lot of struggle. We knew that it was going to be difficult to go to a stop and to the limit, and that’s how it was”.

Alonso lamented those precipitations that came very close to the circuit on the last lap, and that left a moment of tension: “The rain at the end brought a lot of stress when we didn’t need it, but I’m happy,” he said.

When asked about Esteban Ocon’s maneuvers at the start, he did not want to draw blood, although he did point to up to three moments in which he had to avoid the collision. In the end, he was grateful that #31 agreed to leave him the position:

“The truth is that I had to lift both in turn 1 and in 2 and then in 5 especially, that I was going outside of him, and he was quite aggressive in that first lap. But hey, I lifted and that way we didn’t we played and in the end he let me pass and we finished eighth and ninth”, he detailed.

“It would not have changed much for the team, the important thing is to be close to McLaren and today we have scored the same points as them in a difficult race, so in the end I think the result is positive.”

Now, F1 faces a three-week summer break without races, and Alonso made a good gesture by reminding the members of the teams that make the ‘Great Circus’ work: “We have had an intense July, with four races in five weekends of the week so to rest a bit, and the team too, the mechanics…”.

“In the end, we come from Thursday to Sunday, but the people who disassemble and assemble the garage from one week to the next, the truth is that they deserve a little rest,” he concluded.
