Alonso, disappointed in Singapore: "It has not been an ideal day"

The Marina Bay circuit is a track that brings back very good memories for Fernando Alonso, and the fact is that the Spaniard got two victories on that stage and his only Grand Chelem [taking pole position, the fastest lap and winning the race leading all the laps ] in Formula 1. In 2008 , the Spaniard benefited in the midst of the general confusion caused by Crashgate with Nelsinho Piquet to win with Renault, while in 2010 he managed to keep Sebastian Vettel at bay who was going straight for the first position with his Red Bull.

More than a decade after his great milestones, the Alpine driver returned to compete in the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix, hoping to end his time with the Enstone team with the best possible taste in his mouth. In a few days marked by breaking the record and remaining alone as the driver with the most grand prizes in history, the rider from Oviedo signed a fairly discreet Friday, despite the fact that in the early stages he came close to the leaders.

The Spaniard finished the first practice session in ninth position , while after night fell on the Asian streets, he did not go beyond eighth place . For this reason, Alonso was critical of himself after seeing how a mechanical setback hampered his activity schedule: “It has not been an ideal day for us, with limited running-in in the first practice sessions, after the problem with the gearbox.”

“Overall, Free Practice 2 has been good and, although we are a little behind due to the short track time, I think we are in a good place and I am quite confident for tomorrow,” said the two-time Formula 1 world champion.

“The improvement of our car seems to be working well so far, but we will continue to analyze all the data tonight and tomorrow”, explained Fernando Alonso, who stated before the start of the weekend that he wanted to reverse his bad fortune in the last Grand Prix of Italy, where he dropped out, to return to the race series in the points on the Asian tour.
