Alonso hopes Spanish GP reflects Alpine's position

Although it is true that Fernando Alonso’s start to the season has been worse than expected, especially when it comes to numbers, the Alpine A522 has proven to be one of the best cars in the middle zone, coming close to the great favorites in some circuits.

Reliability problems and some errors have meant that the Asturian driver has scored far fewer points than would have been logical in these first Formula 1 rounds in 2022, something that is better reflected in the 24 units that he has achieved to date add his teammate, Esteban Ocon.

To put those feelings behind him, Alonso hopes to be back in the points next weekend at the Spanish Grand Prix, his home race, in which he has shone so many times with the support of a crowd that will fill the Barcelona Circuit – Catalonia a decade later.

In the run-up to the race, the Spanish Alpine driver acknowledged that this grand prix could mark a before and after for him, since almost all the teams arrive with large packages of improvements to a circuit that will finally give an image very specific about the position of each team regarding the hierarchical order of the grid, something that could mark the real objectives this year.

“I have raced in Barcelona for many years, so I know the track very well, everything about the circuit. It is a track that really shows where your car is compared to the rest of the grid and it has been the venue for the tests of winter for many years,” Alonso said.

The Asturian driver also explained the importance of completing a good classification, since in Barcelona overtaking will not be an easy task and if you get a good starting position and avoid problems, scoring a large number of points is possible.

“It’s not easy to overtake, so you have to do a good qualifying. If there’s no safety car or something weird during the race, then it’s hard to come back.”

“We have done quite good qualifying this season, so I hope we can continue on the same path. Saturdays are important in Barcelona, and then have a race without problems”, concluded a Fernando Alonso who hopes to return to the points in front of his fans.
