Alonso only sees advantages in being the oldest driver in F1

Fernando Alonso turned 40 last July and, with the retirement of Kimi Raikkonen (who made his debut on the same day as him), he is the oldest driver on the 2022 grid, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who is 37.

Alonso made his Formula 1 debut with Minardi in 2001. He did not contest the 2002 season, when he was a Renault test driver, and also spent two years out of the top flight after his last season with McLaren F1 in 2018, before returning with Alpine last year.

On his return, he explained that having adapted in 2019 and 2020 to the low-profile tires used in the WEC was a specific example of the benefits that testing in other championships has given him.

“On age, I feel good, I honestly feel it’s an advantage,” he said when asked by Motorsport.com about his new position as the oldest driver on the grid.

“When I come to a circuit, I know the circuits. Now everyone is testing this 18-inch tire, and I know these tires very well after my time in the WEC.”

“It’s exactly the same behavior on the tyres, and the same way you have to drive on that tyre, but at the same time it’s very different. So all the things I’m dealing with, for others it may be the first time. they do, but for me it’s the second or third, so it’s positive.

Alonso acknowledged that staying in competition at the highest level requires some sacrifices, especially with the tight schedule of the current season. In the 2022 season, his eighteenth as a Formula 1 driver, a record 23 grands prix will be held.

“The only problem with being older is that you have to have the motivation to face a season where you are going to be 300 days a year (out, competing),” he said. “You have to have that desire, you have to have that lifestyle that allows you to dedicate yourself to this sport.”

“Apart from that, everything else is advantages. I’m at a point in my life where I want to dedicate it to F1, it’s fantastic and I think I only see advantages.”

“And then physically, I think today’s cars are not very demanding. I think in 2004-2005, maybe age was more of a limitation.”

Minardi M01 (1999)

Renault R23 (2003)

Wearing the blue and yellow colors, characteristic of his first stage at Renault, Alonso achieved his first podium, first fastest lap, first pole position and first victory in Formula 1. Mild Seven had already disappeared from the car, his place taken on the pontoons and ‘Team Spirit’ engine cover. And the 1, of course, appeared on the nose as a sign that a world champion was inside. Renault hit the nail on the head thanks in large part to the ‘Mass dumper’ system, which was deemed illegal and banned from the second half of the season. It was a system placed in the front area of the car that allowed a better weight distribution, greater stability and less tire wear. By the time Renault retired him, it was already too late for Ferrari and despite a brilliant performance in the latter part of the championship, Schumacher was unable to retire with his eighth title. Alonso resisted and prevailed, achieving his second crown.

Willing to forget a bad 2009, Ferrari and Alonso joined forces. The Spaniard took the place of Raikkonen, with Massa as a teammate, with an F10 that wore the number 8. In his debut with the Scuderia he took victory, but was unable to repeat the victory in the following nine races. The second half of the year was better, and Fernando went into the final race in Abu Dhabi with an 8-point lead over Webber, 15 over Vettel and 24 over Hamilton. Ferrari F150º Italy (2011)

Designed by Aldo Costa and Nikolas Tombazis, the 2011 Ferrari of the Year was named 150º Italia. In the first place it was going to be the Ferrari F150 (for the 150th anniversary of the reunification of Italy), but a controversy with Ford, which had a pick-up called the F-150, forced the change. In any case, it was a car unable to fight for the championship, far behind Red Bull and also behind McLaren. Alonso was 4th, after Vettel, Button and Webber, one point off the podium and with the victory of Great Britain as the best result.

Alonso returned to F1 after two years away, and he did so at the hands of Alpine, the new name of the old Renault team. The first races after the return were not easy, but little by little he regained his level and showed that he had not lost any freshness. He completed great races, achieved a podium for the first time since 2014 and finished the year in the top 10 of the drivers’ championship, 10th with 81 points.
