Fernando Alonso does not stop even on vacation. The 2021 F1 season ended just seven days ago, the Spaniard gave almost 150 laps this week in the Abu Dhabi test with the 18-inch Pirelli tires that will enter in 2022. From there he embarked on the Dubai 24 hours of karting , where he finished in third place.
The Asturian teamed up with Pedro Martínez de la Rosa , Ángel Burgueño , Alberto Fernández Galle and Nikola Tsolov , a Bulgarian driver from his karting academy. Alonso started from pole after winning the qualifying race that determined the starting order of the 28 participants in the race.
Alonso’s team completed a total of 1,132 laps of the Dubai karting circuit, coming in 25 seconds behind the winner ( EBC Brakes Racing ) and 181 thousandths off second (Superdryve Maffi Racing ).
“Another 24 hour race at the Dubai Kartodrome Circuit with this amazing team. Amazing atmosphere and top organization as always!” Alonso wrote on Instagram.
With this podium, Alonso thus practically ends an intense 2021 season, that of his return to F1. The Spaniard closed out the championship in 10th place, just ahead of his Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon, and was back on the podium in Qatar after more than seven years.
The two-time F1 world champion will soon begin to prepare for 2022 where there will be a change of rules and in which he has been announcing that he has a ‘Plan’. Before, however, Alonso will have to undergo surgery to remove the plates from the face that have accompanied him since the accident he suffered last February on a bicycle, so he will have two weeks off in January, as confirmed in Abu Dhabi.
