During the presentation of the Alpine A522 , Fernando Alonso was obviously one of the great protagonists. At 40 years old, the Spanish rider still maintains the looks and physique of younger riders, mixed with the experience and wisdom he has gained throughout his career.
The Asturian analyzed the new Formula 1 regulations that will start in this 2022 season, as well as the new team car, which changes its design due to the arrival of BWT as main sponsor, combining its historic pink color with the corporate blue of Alpine.
Alonso trusts Alpine for the 2022 F1 season
“Last season was a transition year for the team as we were heavily reliant on the car inherited from 2020. Still we got some fantastic good results like Esteban’s win in Hungary and my podium finish in Qatar.”
“This year, however, there is a lot of optimism in the team, during the winter we have worked hard in Enstone and Viry , there is a lot of confidence. We will not know where the opponents are until the cars take to the track for the first time in Barcelona” .
“The new regulations give us that opportunity to dream or to have another opportunity to be more competitive and hopefully we can see it quickly in the first tests.”
The new rules of F1 2022 are to Alonso’s liking
“The new regulation logically gives us an extra adrenaline rush. Last year we all knew what the natural order of cars was, of performance, and this year we entered a new era where anything can happen, so I’m happy about it” .
“We are very aware of what we want with these rules: tighter racing and cars that can follow each other closely, especially in the corners. We will have to wait a bit and see if these changes have achieved their objectives.”
“The series is moving in the right direction even off the track. Thanks to the arrival of innovations like the budget cap, we expect the entire field to be even, always keeping a careful eye that no one spends more than the others.”
“If we manage to have more spectacular races, it would be very good for the category. Years ago, the only possibility of overtaking was on the straights with DRS, and sometimes we couldn’t even do that. The idea of being able to follow the car we have more closely up front, even in the corners, it’s very exciting, and it should make the driving more challenging for us.”

“I love the new car. The new colors, the combination… we have of course also interesting technical solutions that we can’t reveal yet. So we’re looking forward to bringing it to the track and hopefully it will be an easy car to drive, we can get all possible benefits as soon as possible”.
“It is very different to previous generations of Formula 1. Now there is a lot of simulation and analysis, but we will know a little more after the first tests. Also, my experiences and knowledge gained last year working on the A521 have been very useful to when configuring the A522, it will have a style that should satisfy me.
Alonso hopes to continue forming a great couple with Ocon in Alpine
“Before I joined Alpine in 2021 I obviously knew Esteban Ocon but not personally. Throughout last season he was a fantastic teammate, he is a very easy to get along with guy and we are looking forward to this new season for share more moments together working in the team garage”.
