Alpine will decide in July between Alonso or Piastri for F1 2023

The French manufacturer has Esteban Ocon on a long-term contract but has not yet decided who it will field alongside the Frenchman from 2023.

The current driver Fernando Alonso ends his contract at the end of this course, but wants to continue after a competitive return to F1.

The Spaniard has impressed with his speed last year and this year, although bad luck at the start of 2022 has cost him several opportunities to score big points.

Oscar Piastri is currently a reserve driver for Alpine after a successful career in lower categories, where he was champion of Formula 3 and Formula 2.

The young Australian needs to return to racing next year if his career is not to stall, so Alpine will have to make a decision on how best to move him forward.

If he decides to keep Alonso for his works team, then one option is for Piastri to be loaned out to another team, with Williams looking the clear favorite to do so.

Asked by Motorsport.com for when to decide on his 2023 line-up, Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer reckoned mid-July would be most likely.

“We haven’t thought about that yet, because it’s a bit early,” he said. “But at Silverstone we will probably talk about it.”

The British GP , at Silverstone, takes place on the weekend of July 1-3.

There are rumors that Williams could even change its lineup this season. Nicholas Latifi is struggling to match Alexander Albon’s pace, and there has been talk that Piastri could make his debut before the end of the year.

However, Szafnauer made it clear that nothing had been negotiated, although he said he would be open to finding any opportunity for Piastri to rack up mileage.

“I haven’t considered it deeply yet,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going on at Williams, but I’ve heard the rumours.”

“In the past, when McLaren came to us and asked: ‘Hey, can we use [Piastri] as a reserve driver?’ we said yes.

“The reason for that is that the longer he can sit in a car instead of in the garage, the better. So we would have that option strategically in mind. But as far as what’s going on at Williams, I don’t know.
