Analysis of Ghosts' n Goblins Resurrection, the return of two great Capcom history preserving their legendary infernal difficulty

0

The first impression is not always the one that counts. Without going any further, when Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection was announced, the joy was somewhat clouded by seeing the game in motion, without the grace of Capcom’s 1985 and 1988 classics. There was something about those animations of Sir Arthur and some enemies that pushed me back, despite the news of his long-awaited return.

It is also true that the “physical” is not the most important thing, being more relevant in this reinterpretation of the classics Ghosts ‘n Goblins and the later Ghouls’ n Ghosts that has been able to replicate its legendary infernal difficulty, the attractiveness of its scenarios or knowing choose the most suitable weapon for each situation. And all this and much more does this remake / reboot hint perfectly.

Your face is familiar to me. And doubly, in addition

The feeling of déjà vu is very strong when getting to the controls of Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection , not in vain it is a tribute to the aforementioned classics of 1985 and 1988, precisely. Capcom has respected their classic essence to the maximum, but completely modified them so that they seem like two new experiences. And in fact, they are two new games, but within one that encompasses both at the same time .

We will return to visit its most emblematic locations, but with a different aspect, completely different routes and especially traps with more bad milk if possible . It wants to be the definitive experience in a Makaimura, being at the same time both the most accessible game and the most difficult thanks to the different degrees of difficulty that we can choose, so that there is no one who is left without playing it.

What do you want to die of two touches (armor and gayumbos) as in the originals? Legend mode is your thing . What do you want to hold three? Knight is your choice. Escudero offers the same as the previous one, but with four strokes. And in these three modes, reappearing after death at the last checkpoint, as before.

Paje, on the other hand, offers all the facilities in the world , reappearing from the same point where they killed us, even going so far as to correct the position a few meters at our whim. Although of course, in this mode we will lose many secrets and its true ending. Ironically, it shares something with the most difficult modes: we have infinite lives in any of them. The reason? On the Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection map we can replay the phases as many times as we want .

Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection, la dureza extrema

This replayable component has another reason for greater, since there are collectibles in each phase in order to obtain 100% of the game and we are also given the possibility of choosing “world” in the first two phases of the game , as a tribute to more straight to the classics from 1985 and 1988. If we opt for “Cemetery”, it will be “almost” like in Ghosts’ n Goblins ; whereas if we opt for “Torture Field”, it will be “almost” like in Ghouls’ n Ghosts . And so with “Crystalline city” and “Infernal farmhouse”, the next two. Then it does become linear.

The tribute is fading to give way to a total reinterpretation in future phases, firing more if the level of difficulty fits, honoring one of the terms that best define this Sir Arthur saga: yes, infernal . Because if it is already screwed to face so much enemy on screen (in Legend, by the way, the number multiplies) while avoiding traps, this reaches sick levels when we have to do it practically in the dark, as it happens in the third phase.

And it is that in the initial section of “Mystical Caverns” there are a lot of candles that illuminate the way, yes, but whose flame we will have to extinguish in order to progress without getting burned when jumping over some of them, which translates into playing in the dark temporarily. It is just one example of how badly the game will make us pass from there , with other types of tricks of the stage in which, based on replaying and memorizing each section, we will be able to overcome it.

Fortunately, beyond the infinite lives, it is benevolent in another aspect that here is a novelty and is nothing other than the tree of orbs . As we collect the hidden fairies for each stage, we can unlock spells and passive abilities for Sir Arthur. In Ghouls’ n Ghosts , without going any further, the spells were given by the weapon, but here they will be independent, with a cooldown (but the obligation to charge the spell to be able to cast it), repeating the same ones from that 1988 classic along with surprises …

An intense experience with great incentives

Being an absolute reinterpretation of two icons from the eighties, it is logical, on the other hand, that certain elements are repeated, but Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection does not stop at mere homage by providing more twists apart from the aforementioned tree of orbs. It keeps a lot of secrets inside it, in fact. All the phases will have a dozen of them, both in the form of fairies and treasure chests, but also through hidden rooms whose access will not be so obvious a priori …

This is undoubtedly one of its strengths in terms of its replayability , because it will no longer be simply to reach the end (or try, even if it is by lowering the level of difficulty if we die too many times), but to see everything that its universe and venture later, if we see ourselves with strength, within its world of darkness, what would be the Dark World of Super Meat Boy and other similar games. It’s insane. Only suitable for Makaimura experts .

Obviously, having unlocked all the branches of the orb tree will make things a bit more affordable, being able to carry up to a maximum of three weapons at the same time (of the eight available) to exchange them at will, have triple damage when staying in gayumbos or unlocking the maximum level of each spell, but none of that prevents us from facing the most difficult game in the entire saga .

As a curiosity, to say that Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection makes use of the RE Engine , the same engine as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The pity is that not all settings look the same, with some full of details that look great with this style and others that contrast for their coldness, like certain characters, who had more charm in the eighties. And one last curiosity, we can play cooperatively . Yes, but the second player is the “pet”. Specifically, it will become three types of “family” with the aim of making the game easier for the first player, creating bridges, a shield or raising it through the air.

In short, saving the pros and cons of its graphic section, Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection is the perfect tribute to a legendary saga by Capcom. If you have sucked the classics of 1985 and 1988, you will enjoy it like a dwarf. And if not, also. But they have to play this kind of game for you, of course, where Maldita Castilla (Locomalito) is our best representation in Spain.
