Another prototype of THQ's Avengers game comes to light that was canceled almost a decade ago

This year we Marvel’s Avengers, the Avengers official video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. Of all the titles that have wanted to bring together this command of superheroes, this one aims to be the most ambitious, but it is not the first to try .

As we have known for a long time, the late THQ had in hand an Avengers game whose cancellation made headlines back in 2011. It was not even officially announced, but from the leaked material we could see that it was a game in first person. Today another prototype has come to light.

Andrew Borman, head of digital game preservation at the Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, has posted a video with very early footage from that canceled Marvel title . It is the one that you can see above this paragraph.

According to it, this build (which dates from July 2011) has been recovered from a hard drive in the ObscureGamers portal, also dedicated to the preservation of games, although it is missing a lot of files that surely should be included. I guess that explains why there is so much placeholder in the scenarios, enemies and objects.

This version works on an Xbox 360, and in it we can see a team of several players each embodying a superhero (or they should be players, but here they are controlled by the AI) and distributing tow to what seem to be a lot of clonic skrulls. All this in the first person, with experience points in between and a lot of emphasis on melee. Except in the case of Iron Man of course, who has a few weapons in his suit.

The interface and the gameplay bear many similarities to the prototype that was already leaked in its day, although that one was much more complete, yes. However, it is always good to take a fresh look at a game that could have come true but ultimately did not .
